What are the benefits you have realized from EHR Adoption?
We are in the process of making the transition to an electronic medical record (after dallying with a couple of different systems over the last few years). We are currently NCQI certified as a level one Patient-Centered Medical Home. In the near future, there will be many financial incentives tied to attributes of the Patient-Centered Medical Home. These will be virtually impossible (as we have learned) without an electronic record system. An electronic system is not just about the money (though we are hopeful of that financial support for it is forthcoming from many sources), it is primarily about quality. Provision of modern quality care is virtually impossible without this kind of tool.
What advice would you offer a physician planning to adopt an EHR?
The great majority of the electronic medical record systems now available were designed primarily for the purpose of enhanced billing and not primarily for population-based health management. The registry functions of the electronic medical record system must be robust for the system to allow your practice to qualify for the quality-related financial incentives that are forthcoming. Ask hard questions about population-based quality management features in the system.
What financial strategies did you use to pay for your EHR?
RI Insurer Incentive, IPA Discount.
