What are the benefits you have realized from EHR Adoption?
Notes are certainly instantly available with the added advantage of portability (for home, etc.). We are never without a chart or access to data, anywhere or any time. Billing/coding has improved tremendously and has permitted electronic remittance that has really improved cash flow. While I believe I am seeing fewer partients than before EHR implementation, there has been a slight increase in income.
What advice would you offer a physician planning to adopt an EHR?
Recognize that there will be time and financial costs involved, and that you and your staff will need to do things differently. Think how you would like things set up from a hardware standpoint. Having done this in earnest now for three years, I believe it would have been wiser to hardwire each exam room with a terminal rather than to use a carried tablet. A wireless mouse has proved very useful with the carried tablet.
What financial strategies did you use to pay for your EHR?
Combination out-of-pocket and BCBS Quality Counts initiative.
