What are the benefits you have realized from EHR Adoption?
Transcription costs were cut significantly. Personnel were decreased in Billing and Medical Records. ePrescribing has been embraced, with attendant decrease in phone and faxed requests per prescription refills. Tracking prescription history has been very helpful, especially when covering other physicians. Access to clinical data from remote sites (eg. hospital, home when on call) has improved communication and thus patient care. Charts are always available!

What advice would you offer a physician planning to adopt an EHR?
Have a full understanding of your existing workflow and a clear idea of the "wish list" of changes you would like to implement with the EHR. Work with an IT vendor that has extensive field experience with your EHR software. Involve every member of your staff in the planning process and keep them all in the loop as you progress. Purchase plenty of training. Plan a gradual implementation to minimize disruption. Stay in contact with multiple resources to help you as problems arise - colleagues, vendors, user forums, etc.
