Why not?

Reid Coleman's picture

There are 500 physicians who are responsible for most of the prescriptions written in RI, yet a large number of these 'heavy hitters' are not e-prescribing. We'd like to know why not - not speculation about what others may think but YOUR reasons for not utilizing eprescribing. Once we know, we can try to solve the issues.

E-prescribing has been proven to save time for doctors and patients, and reduce errors.

Practice management software can limit which e-Rx vendor you use. We wanted to use Allscripts, but for forced to use Emdeon Clinician, which is "compatible" with our PMS Intergy. A prohibitive fee for our 5 doctor practice precluded implementing the HL7 interface needed to access our patient data our preferred choice of Allscripts.

Emdeon Clinician reads about 25% of our known BC/BS patients (including myself) as having no insurance. This defaults the system to medical assistance which can be overridden but then tiered information is lost.

BC/BS says everything is running well on their end as does Emdeon.

These are two issues we came across which certainly would give us pause before moving toward full EMR. That said, there are many more pluses to e-Rxing than negative and there is no going back to paper.
